Contact lens story a prompt to check your eyes

July 18 2017

When a woman from Birmingham visited hospital for a routine cataract operation, her surgeons were shocked to find 27 contact lenses in her eye which then had to be removed.

In a report in the British Medical Journal the surgeons said that 17 of the lenses were stuck together. The patient had worn disposable contact lenses for 35 years and had not complained of any irritation. According to the report she simply thought it was discomfort and dry eye caused by age.

This is an extreme case, but it is a prompt to us all to pay closer attention to the health of our eyes.

If you wear contact lenses, here are Rochdale CATS and North West Macular's seven top tips for healthy contact lens use:

  1. Make sure you get eight hours break from your lenses and never sleep in them.
  2. Before putting anything in your eye, wash and dry your hands.
  3. Always apply make up after you have put in your lenses.
  4. Consult your optician immediately if there is any redness, pain or loss of vision.
  5. Reduce the risk of infection by replacing your lens case regularly.
  6. Have regular check-ups with you optometrist or optician.
  7. If there is any doubt, however small, remove your lenses.
